5 Questions You NEED to Ask Before Hiring Your Wedding Photographer

Hi there! I’m Haley, a professional wedding photographer in Denver, Colorado.

Okay, so you’re newly engaged and currently going through the long list of vendors you need to hire for your wedding. A wedding photographer is next on the list. Well my dear, this is probably the MOST important person you will hire! Your wedding images will preserve the precious memories from your wedding day and I don’t want you to be disappointed with them.

I’ve had so many women express to me their disappointment with their wedding photographers, simply because of the lack of communication. Every wedding photographer is different. They each have different styles of shooting, styles of editing, different collections, different products, and they all have different terms. It’s important that you ask the right questions BEFORE you sign the contract so that you know exactly what to expect.

Here are 5 questions you NEED to ask, before hiring your wedding photographer.

1. How many weddings have you photographed?

Weddings are not always easy to photograph. The truth is, for the photographer, they are very fast paced and there’s not a whole lot of time for error. An experienced wedding photographer can capture all the meaningful moments of your day, even to the smallest detail. She/he can handle those unexpected conditions efficiently such as low light, rain, snow, etc. I remember how difficult it was for me in the beginning, just trying to figure out what my camera settings needed to be every few minutes. It seemed like everything was happening so fast and I was stressing out just to get the shots! But with experience, I became more knowledgable and my clients never needed to worry if I would meet their expectations. You’re investing a lot of money into your photographer, so make sure you know how much experience they have so you know you can trust them 🙂

2. Will all of the edited digital files be included in the collection?

Oh man, this is SO important to know. Every wedding photographer is different and they offer different products. Make sure that it is clear what their collections include. Digital files are often sold separately, they’re not always included in your collection. I’ve had women tell me how upset they were when they found out AFTER the wedding, that they would have to pay extra for their digital files. They didn’t realize they only paid the photographer for his/her time. Once you’ve found the photographer that is perfect for you, it’s important that you ask this question so you know what you’re paying for 🙂

3. What is included in the editing?

This isn’t a question you would think to ask a photographer because you’ve seen all the beautiful images on their website. You probably know what their work looks like! BUT.. one thing to take into consideration is the fact that photographers display their best work on their website. Not all photographers will include certain edits such as skin retouching, blemish removal, color toning, object removal.. etc. If you are expecting your wedding images to be entirely retouched, you definitely want to find out if there are additional fee’s for that.

4. How do you handle low light situations?

It’s essential to know if your wedding photographer will have equipment on hand for low light situations. The reception will likely be very dark and your photographer will need a light source. Since most of the natural light will be gone at this point,  you want to make sure your photographer has a flash. Most DSLR cameras will generate very grainy and dark images without one. I highly recommend looking at a few different weddings on their blog to see how the reception images look!

5. How many images can I expect to receive?

Once you’ve established whether the digitals are included in the collection price or not, you’ll want to ask how many images you can expect to receive from your wedding photographer. Some photographers offer different coverage options per collection so the amount of images will vary depending on the collection you choose. We provide full coverage in every collection so we give our clients approximately 300 edited images. Its best to know this before you book with your photographer just so you aren’t caught by surprise after the wedding!

Your wedding will be one of the best days of your life and we don’t want you disappointed with your images! Lack of communication can often cause a lot of disappointment after the wedding simply because the bride and groom were unaware of the specs in the agreement. Of course most professional wedding photographers will provide you with everything you need to know before booking, but it’s possible you could miss the fine print or even skim through the contract without seeing those important details. Asking these 5 simple questions before hiring your wedding photographer will give you the information you need to know before signing the contract!
